What to do before and during the exam

Before the Exam

  • Get Prepared
    • 听Study a few weeks in advance.
    • 听Book a tutoring and/or Academic coaching appointment at the .
    • 听Make an appointment during office hours to get tips and guidance from your professors. You can also ask your professor what material will be on the test so you can get an idea of what the test will be about.
    • 听If you have test-taking accommodations, make sure to fill out the 5-business days before the exam.
  • Study Effectively
    • 听Check out the Academic Success Center鈥檚 that will help your overall well-being for your student success.
    • 听Attend a workshop hosted by the Academic Success Center. Take a look at the to see what workshops are being offered.
  • Take Care of Yourself
    • 听Eat well, get enough sleep, exercise/move your body regularly, and engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation.

      • Give yourself a pep-talk: reframe your anxiety into excitement. Telling yourself you are excited can help you see the exam more positively.

During the Exam

  • Calm your body: Take deep breaths, stretch, tighten your muscles and then relax them, close your eyes and count to ten.
  • Sit comfortably and have a good posture: Sitting up, relaxing your shoulders, and being mindful of your posture can help you feel more powerful, confident, and assertive. It makes you less stressed, sluggish, and anxious..
  • Calm your emotions and thoughts:
    • Focus on the present moment with reminders to yourself:
      • For example: 鈥淚t is 9am on Tuesday. I am sitting at a desk to take my exam.鈥
    • Replace negative thoughts with positive thoughts:
      • For example: 鈥淚t鈥檚 okay if I can鈥檛 answer this question鈥擨 can answer another question instead.鈥
    • Avoid thoughts about the past and future:
      • Examples
        • 鈥淚 should have done more practice problems.鈥
        • 鈥淚 need an A on this test in order to improve my GPA鈥
      • Focus on yourself and completing the test
        • Ignore what other people are doing, do not compare yourself to others, and do not panic when you see others finishing.
        • Be okay with doing well, not perfectly.
