{"id":12567,"date":"2022-05-10T21:50:04","date_gmt":"2022-05-11T04:50:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/news\/?p=12567"},"modified":"2022-11-21T09:22:46","modified_gmt":"2022-11-21T17:22:46","slug":"campus-times-wins-two-society-of-professional-journalists-mark-of-excellence-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/news\/2022\/05\/10\/campus-times-wins-two-society-of-professional-journalists-mark-of-excellence-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Campus Times Wins Two Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of La&nbsp;Verne\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/lvcampustimes.org\/\"><em>Campus Times<\/em> student newspaper<\/a> has won two regional 2022 Mark of Excellence Awards from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spj.org\/index.asp\">Society of Professional Journalists<\/a>, including placing in the \u201cBest All-Around\u201d competition, the association announced.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, the <em>Campus Times<\/em> was recognized with the \u201cCorbin Gwaltney Award for Best All-Around Student Newspaper\u201d for which the entire staff was named \u201cfinalist\u201d (second place) in the Western Regional contest among college news outlets, based on work published in 2021. Deja Goode, 2021 journalism alumna, was editor-in-chief for spring 2021, and David Gonzalez, senior journalism major, was editor-in-chief for fall 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Jaydelle Herbert, senior journalism major, was named finalist (second place) in the \u201cBreaking News\u201d category for her story \u201cUniversity will hold in-person commencement event in June.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The annual Mark of Excellence Awards honor the best in student journalism. Judges review nominees based upon the following criteria:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>Accuracy and completeness<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Enterprise and ingenuity<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Adherence to high journalistic standards<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Significance and effectiveness<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Extenuating circumstances<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Clarity, insight and respect for the audience<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Creative use of the medium\u2019s unique capabilities<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Adherence to the SPJ\u00a0<\/span><span>Code of Ethics<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Available resources<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Professor of Journalism Elizabeth Zwerling is chief faculty adviser, and Associate Professor of Photography Shannon Benine is photography adviser for the <em>Campus Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Eric Borer, journalism operations manager,\u00a0 envisioned and set up the remote workflow system \u2013 via which the <em>Campus Times<\/em> published weekly without interruption throughout the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>One of largest and best-known journalism organizations\u2014with roughly 300 chapters across the US and more than 9,000 media members\u2013the Society of Professional Journalists, formerly known as Sigma Delta Chi, was established in 1909 at DePauw University. Aside from its annual contests honoring excellence in journalism, SPJ woks to promote and defend freedom of speech and freedom of the press, and to support diversity, ethical behavior and high standards in professional and student journalism.<\/p>\n<p>The Mark of Excellence Awards are the second major recognition for <em>Campus Times<\/em> this year, following <a href=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/news\/2022\/04\/14\/campus-times-named-one-the-nations-top-11-college-newspapers-online-hybrids\/\">awards last month from the <\/a><span>Columbia Scholastic Press
