Available Performance Scholarships Jumpstart College Experience
Dreams of a college education became a reality for Melanie Nadon on the day she was awarded a Performance Scholarship from the University of La Verne.
Nadon, a senior with a double major in Speech Communication and Gender, Law, and Policy, learned about the unique Performance Scholarship opportunity from her counselor at Los Osos High School in Rancho Cucamonga. She immediately began applying her time, talent and energy toward speech and debate, one of the six Performance Scholarship categories available.
鈥淭he Scholarship was really important to me, because without it I would never have been able to afford college,鈥 Nadon said.
Thanks to the scholarship, Nadon joined the university鈥檚 debate team, where she began competing nationally as well as internationally.
鈥淚 had never left the country before, and during my very first year at La Verne I traveled to Taiwan, the Philippines, England and Canada,鈥 Nadon said.
She has also competed in Budapest, Hungary and various states throughout the U.S., and will be competing in the upcoming World Championships in Malaysia as well as and the National Tournament in Alaska.
鈥淎pplying for the scholarship and continuing on the debate team is by far the best decision I鈥檝e ever made,鈥 said Nadon, who will be graduating in spring 2015.
The and the December 15th deadline is fast approaching. The University will offer two $25,000 scholarships with fourth year full-tuition in each of the following featured performance areas:
- Art (any media)
- Communications (video production)
- Music (voice or instrument)
- Photography
- Speech (debate)
- Theatre (performance or design)
Scholarships are for incoming freshman, international and transfer students only, and are renewable annually up to four years of undergraduate study, based on the student鈥檚 academic progress and participation in the program. To read more about the scholarships, and application requirements, .
